Oligopolistic competition and welfare
This chapter provides a selective survey of recent developments in the study of social welfare under oligopoly. The main topics covered are (i) the rate of cost passthrough as a tool to analyze market performance; (ii) the quantification of welfare losses due to market power in Cournot-style models; and (iii) new results from models with endogenous entry. The chapter highlights common themes ac...

Sometimes large corporations create several firms which compete in the same market. There are, at least, three different explanations of this policy: (a) under decreasing returns production efficiency requires plant diversification, (b) competition alleviates incentive problems due to moral hazard, and (c) competing firms are a credible commitment to Stackelberg leadership of the group. In this...

We study firms' optimal investment behavior in a dynamic duopoly framework. Embodied technological progress makes later generations more productive. The resulting model is a differential game combined with a vintage capital goods structure. Since such a framework has not been analyzed before, existing concepts have to be modified. Our numerical analysis first shows that a technological breakthr...
متن کاملThe Impact of Oligopolistic Competition in Networks
In the traffic assignment problem, commuters select the shortest available path to travel from a given origin to a given destination. This system has been studied for over 50 years since Wardrop’s seminal work (1952). Motivated by freight companies, which need to ship goods across the network, we study a generalization of the traffic assignment problem in which some competitors control a non-ne...
متن کاملOligopolistic competition as a common agency game
In applying the common agency framework to the context of an oligopolistic industry, we want to go beyond the classical dichotomy between Cournot and Bertrand competition. We deÞne two games, the oligopolistic game and the corresponding concept of oligopolistic equilibrium, and an associated auxiliary game that can be interpreted as a common agency game and that has the same set of equilibria. ...
